For those who are unfamiliar with City Winery, it is a restaurant, bar, and small concert hall that seats up to 300 guests. City Winery is located at 1200 W. Randolph Street in the Fulton Market District. The first City Winery was located in New York before they expanded operations. The Chicago location opened in 2012. This West Loop winery produces dozens of in-house wines from vineyards in Washington, Oregon, California, Chile, and Argentina. While audiences enjoy performances from both local and well-known musicians and vocalists, they also have the opportunity to order food from the restaurant.

On Friday, October 11, 2019, City Winery continued its concert series with R&B singer and songwriter Vivian Green.  Ms. Green first arrived on the scene in 2002 with her first album titled, A Love Story. From this album, audiences heard such hits as Emotional Roller Coaster, What is Love?, Gotta Go Gotta Leave (Tired) and the remake of Karyn White’s Super Woman. Since then, she has gone on to make five additional albums, which include: Vivian (2005), Beautiful (2010), Vivid (2015), VGVI (2017) and Fatherless Child (2018).

I had the opportunity to see Vivian Green about 19 years ago when she was promoting her first album in Chicago at the Double Door.  She is still just as vocally strong as when she started. Her new music is much different from what her fans may remember. The smooth sultry music has been replaced with an up-beat tempo and Caribbean vibe. From her recent album, the audience sang along with her. She performed music from her VGVI album. Most notable were, That’s What Love Can Do and I don’t know.  I have to admit there were times when the music drowned out her vocals. It seemed as though it took a while to get the audience warmed up, but it may have been because there were a lot of distractions with the waiters. My table experienced a lot of disruptions during the performance. The seating in the venue is so tight that quite a few times we had people bumping into our chairs or the waiters passed food in front of us, obstructing our view.

Overall, the experience was enjoyable and the food was tasty.  If you like intimate spaces, good food, and fine wine, I’d recommend the City Winery as a place to be. For more information regarding City Winery’s concert series and private events, please visit the website: www.citywinery.com
