Most millennials can all relate to one common thing. We saw it on TV, we watched it on the big screen, we heard it on the radio. We learned lessons from it and dreamed our biggest dreams because of it. That it is the magic of Disney. While Disney was around for decades prior to the birth of the millennial generation, the company had a heyday in the late 1980’s, through the 1990’s. During that time period, Disney experienced mega-hits on the big screen, multiple Oscar awards, songs sung by people of all generations and must-see afternoon TV programming. The classics from that time period are still beloved today, by children of the ‘80s and ‘90s, and beyond.
Disney Concerts and the Hollywood Bowl brought those wonderful Disney memories from the ‘80s and ‘90s to life, with two nights under the stars, for the magical show Disney ‘80s-‘90s Celebration in Concert. The show featured Disney all-star Corbin Bleu (High School Musical), alongside Broadway stars Aisha Jackson, Arielle Jacobs, Krysta Rodriguez and Adam J. Levy. The group was backed by the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, led by conductor Sarah Hicks, and accompanied by members of LA’s DC6 Singers Collective. Special guests included Disney legends Jodi Benson (the voice of The Little Mermaid’s Ariel), Bill Farmer (the voice of Goofy for the last 37 years) and Susan Egan (voice of Hercules’ Meg).
While the crowd was certainly filled with millennials who grew up adoring Disney in the ‘80s and ‘90s, there were attendees of all ages – from the newest Alpha Generation, to Gen Z and Baby Boomers, and everything in between. The entire audience cheering, clapping and singing along goes to show that Disney truly brings out the kid in all of us.
The Hollywood Bowl Orchestra helped bring the music of the best movies and shows from Disney in the ‘80s and ‘90s back to the forefront of our minds. They played hits from classic movies like The Little Mermaid, Hocus Pocus and The Lion King, to nostalgic themes songs from Disney TV shows like Duck Tales, Tail Spin and Goof Troop. The ability for this orchestra to draw attendees in is unparalled. And while the orchestra brought the music to life, the talented singers onstage brought the characters to life. Attendees had tears in their eyes hearing Jodi Benson sing “Part of Your World,” and grins on their faces hearing Bill Farmer sing like Goofy. The show was so special, especially taking place at the Hollywood Bowl, nestled in the hills of Hollywood – a place where dreamers go to tell their stories, just like Walt Disney himself did decades ago. His legacy clearly lives on in song and music, and will for generations to come.
