Musical Theater Works presents Legally Blonde The Musical! It is currently running at North Shore Center for the Performing Arts in Skokie, Illinois through December 29th. This much fun should be illegal! The new musical is based on the cult classic film, which shares the story of Elle Woods and her faithful pup, Bruiser, on their journey from Southern California roots to the hallowed halls of Harvard Law School. Elle learns life’s important lessons on the subjects of love, friendship, the law, and self-respect.
Based on the novel and popular 2001 movie starring Reese Witherspoon, the musical version is a delightful, fun and moving tale that will get you rooting and clapping for its heroine and friends.
Kayla Shipman, who I recently saw as Audrey in Little Shop of Horrors, gives an impressive and heartfelt performance as Elle Woods. She is hopeful for love, and preserves to prove to herself and others that you are always enough. She is an independent, kind and strong woman, who strives for what she believes in, breaking stereotype barriers, and to help others see their true worth.
Daniel Rausch is Warner Huntington III, Elle’s ex boyfriend, whom she follows to Harvard Law School after he breaks up with her to win him back. Rausch plays the part with perfect shallow insight and humor. Crystal Claros as Vivienne Kingsinton, Warner’s new serious law student fiance, is also a character and performer to highly admire and respect with her singing and acting chops.
You are also introduced to David Moreland as Emmett Forrest, Elle’s law class teaching assistant, Korey White (Elle’s law professor), Amanda Handegan as Brooke Wyndam (the rich, high profile fitness instructor accused of if her elderly husband’s murder), and Khaki Pixley as Paulette, Elle’s eccentric, yet funny hairdresser sidekick.
Rounding out the talented cast are a large and diverse ensemble members in multiple roles. You will also fall in love with the fur babies who play Elle’s chihuahua, Bruiser (played by Kandi), and Paulette’s pitty pooch, Rufus (played by Nosi)!
Even if you have never read the book or seen the film, this is a musical that will inspire you to always believe in yourself and others, and to follow your gut instincts and your dreams. If you have seen the film, it will definitely bring back some movie nostalgia, while also providing a fresh take on the original story and characters.
The musical is pure fun, lovely, funny, and inspiring. Catchy pop tunes and lyrics have you enthralled and singing along with the show from start to finish. It should have you leaving the theater at the end with a big smile on your face, and love and hope in your heart.
